The pOST BUILDING REbranded

Inspiration for the portal -the colloquial name for the logo- came from the building’s west gate, honoring the art-deco features that define its character. A series of growing line-arches equidistant from each other, creates a repetitive pattern symbolizing the expansive nature of the geospatial industry. The logo infuses a sense of grounded stability, strength, and solidity to the identity system, paired with a color palette in alignment with Startwood Group’s green. Complementary tones borrow from military camo and industrial finishes in the building.

THE FORMER ST. LOUIS POST-DIST BUILDING gets a new brand on time for the GEOINT 2023 Symposium —the largest annual gathering of geospatial intelligence professionals in the nation.

The Post Building is a captivating blend of historic Art Deco architecture and contemporary, soaring workspace, thanks to a transformative renovation in 2020. As the Midwest headquarters for fintech pioneer Block Inc., The Post is strategically positioned in the heart of the Downtown North Insight District, as the epicenter of St. Louis’ emerging GEOINT and fintech ecosystem. With its close proximity to The Globe, T-Rex, America's Convention Center, and the NGA West campus.

In 2020, The Post underwent a transformative renovation led by StarWood Group in partnership with Trivers architects, CannonDesign and Tarlton as General Contractor. The result is a stunning adaptive reuse effort that blends modern design, historic urban fabric and a community-focused mission to create a remarkable new space in the heart of St. Louis.

Mementos from the building’s past have become reminders of what was before, namely the original Goss printing press. The behemoth unapologetically spans across the ground floor while the steel beams that support it from underneath have become basement level lounges.

The renovation of The Post Building allows for its residents to decide its story. It is a timeless space set up for occupants to shape its function within the community of Downtown North.

NGA IN THE OPEN

Robert Cardillo, founder of National Center for Location Science and former NGA Director, discusses how a new NGA will “succeed in the open,” the Next NGA West campus and the growth of the geospatial industry in Saint Louis.

In the video above, Robert Cardillo, founder of National Center for Location Science and former NGA Director, discusses how a new NGA will “succeed in the open,” the Next NGA West campus and the growth of the geospatial industry in Saint Louis.

Years ago, because of its classified missions and membership in the U.S. intelligence community, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency remained largely unknown to most Saint Louisans, let alone most Americans. “This was not by accident,” as former NGA director Robert Cardillo explains in our recent interview.

Thanks in part to the development of a new NGA campus in North Saint Louis, which is intentionally located next to many industry partners and academic institutions, a more inclusive, public-facing NGA wants to “succeed in the open.”

Cardillo currently spearheads the recently formed National Center for Location Science, which aims to work with a number of partners on the development of tools and technology for location science-based applications. The organization will also office out of the Downtown North district to be part of the growing geospatial sector.

PATHS TO GEOSPATIAL MAPPING

Simon Bailey, CEO of T-Kartor USA, discusses his journey to map making, and how others can launch their own career path in the geospatial intelligence industry.

In our recent video interview, Simon Bailey, CEO of T-Kartor USA, discusses his journey to map making, and how others can launch their own career path in the geospatial intelligence industry.

Simon Bailey’s father was a general contractor. Bailey spent his summers as a kid growing up on construction sites, learning the tools of the trade, and as he says, “getting into trouble.” Bailey eventually started working for his father at the construction sites, where he fondly look upon the surveyors who visited to layout site plans. Bailey wondered, why can’t I do that? And it wasn’t long before he had a job surveying land himself. Then he learned AutoCAD software, and his long-term career in map-making and way-finding began.

According to Bailey, anyone can break into the geospatial industry today, and “you don’t need a four-year college degree.”

Bailey is now the CEO of T-Kartor USA, a company that creates and maintains geographical information, maps and charts for a number of industries and organizations, including the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. T-Kartor USA is based out of the Globe Building in the Downtown North district of Saint Louis. Learn more at t-kartorusa.com.

NGA CAMPUS CHARGES ON

NGA West Campus Construction Proceeds Without Delay.

Construction of the new National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) campus in North Saint Louis is moving forward without delay, despite a number of challenges brought on by the pandemic.

Concrete foundations are in place, and steel frames are rising from the ground, bringing about the largest federal investment in Saint Louis history.

Slated for completion in 2024, construction on the new campus is a team effort being led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, McCarthy-HITT, and NGA project management leaders and engineers. Nearly 450 workers can be found at the 97-acre site each day, in addition to five cranes, two bulldozers, two excavators and many more trucks, lifts, and skid-steers.

According to a recent NGA release, “the steel erections for the campus’ structures are projected to be complete by November, at which time the construction focus will shift to the installation of building enclosures, or walls, for the main building, central utilities plant and parking garages.”

More than 3,000 NGA employees are expected to move to the new office in 2025, which will undoubtedly bring new electricity to the area.

As an anchor for a growing geospatial industry in Saint Louis, the new campus is also attracting CEOs from far and wide to the Downtown North area. Geospatial tech companies Maxar, T-Kartor USA, and Ball Aerospace have all leased space in area office buildings, including The Globe, T-Rex, and The Post.

Former NGA Director Robert Cardillo recently founded the National Center for Location Science (NCLS) and intends to establish an initial office at The Post (700 N Tucker), a building which will also house the new St. Louis offices of fin-tech company Square.

“Connective tissue that wasn’t there before is starting to fill in,” said Cardillo. “There’s a real momentum happening out here in North St. Louis, and it’s building on itself.”
